Know Your Sub-Zero
We service the full Sub-Zero range across Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens: the classic BI built-in series such as the BI-36, BI-42 and BI-48, the newer Designer and PRO columns, the 600 and 700 series, undercounter refrigerator and freezer drawers, and the 424 and 427 wine storage units. Many of the larger built-ins use two independent sealed systems, one for the fresh-food side and one for the freezer, which is why a warm refrigerator with a still-frozen freezer is a common and very fixable Sub-Zero symptom rather than a whole-unit failure.
The Condenser Comes First
On most Sub-Zero built-ins the condenser sits behind the upper grille. Brush and vacuum it every three to six months with the unit powered off. A clogged condenser is the most common reason a Sub-Zero runs constantly, drifts warm or ices up, and clearing it is the highest-value thing an owner can do. If the coil is greasy rather than dusty, have it cleaned professionally and the condenser fan checked at the same time.

Gaskets, Doors and the Little Signals
Sub-Zero magnetic gaskets are a wear item. Keep them clean and test them by closing a door on a slip of paper: if it pulls out with no resistance, the seal is weak in that spot and worth replacing before it overworks the compressor. Sub-Zero does not publish numeric fault codes, so the unit talks to you through behavior instead, a warmer interior, a compressor that never cycles off, a new rattle from a fan. Treat those as early signals and they usually stay small repairs.
Wine and Undercounter Units
Sub-Zero wine units like the 424 and 427 are precision refrigerators and deserve the same condenser care as a built-in. Give them clearance, keep the condenser clean, and do not overfill. If a zone drifts warm and stays that way with a clean condenser, the usual causes are a thermistor or an evaporator fan, both straightforward to replace with genuine OEM parts.

The Bottom Line
A Sub-Zero rewards attention. A clean condenser, sound gaskets and a fresh water filter prevent most of the calls we see, and because these units are built around serviceable parts, even an older Sub-Zero is almost always worth keeping running rather than replacing.
